Solar cells under ALMM ambit: The Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Pralhad Joshi has said that his ministry is considering a proposal to include solar cells in the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). A final decision is to be made shortly. He made the statement while speaking with the local media. ALMM is an Indian government initiative to ensure and support domestic manufacturing of solar cells and modules, and also limit Chinese imports. So far, it has imposed ALMM List-1 which comprises solar PV modules and their manufacturers that can be used for any government, government-aided, government-related solar PV projects. The List-II for solar cells has not been issued as yet.

Sunsure lands Tata financing: Renewable energy producer Sunsure Energy has raised INR 2.26 billion ($27 million) in long-term debt financing from Tata Capital for its open-access solar projects in the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP). Sunsure said this financing will boost its operational capacity to 75 MW, and help industrial consumers lower their carbon emissions by an estimated 80,000 tons annually.

TotalEnergies & AGEL for 1.15 GW AC: Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) and France’s TotalEnergies have agreed to launch a new 50:50 joint venture (JV) for a 1.575 GW DC/1.15 GW AC solar portfolio in Khavda, Gujarat. Power generated will be sold to the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) under a power purchase agreement (PPA), and on the wholesale market. TotalEnergies will provide an equity investment of $444 million to support the development of the assets that AGEL will bring in under the JV. The French energy group said this transaction will allow it to capitalize on the ongoing liberalization of the Indian electricity market. TotalEnergies has a 19.75% stake in AGEL, which is developing the world’s largest renewable energy complex in Khavda with 30 GW of solar and wind power capacity. Of this, 2 GW has been commissioned on site, according to AGEL.

GameChange Solar bags India contract: US-based solar tracker manufacturer GameChange Solar has signed a tracker supply contract for 750 MW in India. Under this, it will supply its Genius Tracker solution for a 750 MW solar power plant in Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat to Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited. The project is part of the 30 GW Khavda Renewable Energy Park. For GameChange, this is one of its largest tracker installation projects outside of the US.

New RE business vertical for L&T: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has launched a new renewable energy vertical for Renewable EPC out of its Power Transmission and Distribution business, within the Infrastructure Projects segment. This decision reflects the energy transition led growth in its infrastructure segment, explained the engineering behemoth. It counts a vast 22 GW portfolio of renewable EPC experience spanning ground-mounted solar, floating solar and wind balance of plant projects, as well as battery storage systems. The Renewable EPC business will be led by the Head of Renewable Business, a position to be held by the group’s Senior Vice President A. Ravindran.

Open-access capacity grows: A new Mercom India Research report counts India’s open-access solar PV capacity to have grown by 3.6 GW in H1 2024. This represents a 153% increase over the 1.4 GW installed in H1 2023. It surpasses the total annual installations of all prior years, it added. Mercom attributes the growth to the availability of low-cost modules imported in the earlier quarters. The other factors were green energy targets and sustainable initiatives. As of June 2024, India’s total installed open-access solar PV capacity reached 16.3 GW, with Karnataka as the leading state contributing over 30% of this volume.

52 MW deal for Oriana: Renewable energy EPC company Oriana Power Limited has won the contract to design and commission a 52 MW solar power plant in Prayagraj, UP. It estimates an investment of INR 2.48 billion ($29.5 million) to execute the project for a customer in the petroleum industry.
