RE Drives Brazil’s Power Capacity Additions

• Aneel says 5.1 GW new power generation capacity came online in Brazil in H1/2023
• It was led by wind energy with 2.3 GW, while solar PV accounted for 42.76% with 2.2 GW
• In the month of May 2023, Brazil's solar capacity additions were 789.8 MW, but declined to only 170 MW in June 2023, according to Aneel's statistics

Brazil's power generation mix added a total of 5.1 GW new capacity during H1/2023, led by 2.3 GW wind power and 2.2 GW of solar energy, according to the latest statistics released by the country's National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).

With this solar PV accounted for 42.76% of the total power capacity added, followed by 521.4 MW thermal power plants, 121.5 MW small hydroelectric projects (PCH), and 11.4 MW hydroelectric power stations. Altogether, 160 power plants came online during the period.

In the month of June 2023, Brazil added 538.1 MW capacity of which 239.4 MW was in Rio Grande do Norte. Previously, between January 2023 to May 2023 Aneel said the country added 2.033 GW of solar PV capacity, meaning in June Brazil added around 170 MW new PV which is way less than 789.8 MW it reported for this power source in May 2023 (see Brazilian Solar Installations Growing).

At the end of June 2023, Brazil's total operational renewable energy capacity increased to account for 83.64% of the national power mix of 193.9 GW.
