Key Takeaways
  • Sonnex plans a 500 MW solar module factory in Bangladesh under a JV with Solar EPC Development

  • Phase I will be led by Solar EPC Development with a focus on solar projects and EPC, while Phase II will see the module manufacturing plant coming online

  • The JV aims for GW-level expansion by 2035, leveraging Bangladesh’s cost-effective operations and policy incentives

German solar module manufacturer Sonnex Energie has announced plans to establish a 500 MW solar module manufacturing plant in Bangladesh by 2028, in a joint venture (JV) partnership with local EPC company Solar EPC Development Ltd.

Under Phase I of the JV partnership, Solar EPC Development will lead the focus on local solar project development, EPC services and distribution, with Sonnex supplying its solar panels for these projects.

Phase II of the collaboration will see the 500 MW solar module production line coming online to serve both the local market as well as neighboring countries.

Sonnex currently operates over 2 GW of annual solar module production capacity in Germany using the ‘most recent cell technologies.’ Its manufacturing expansion into Bangladesh is backed by cost-effective operations in the country with competitive labor and infrastructure costs.

Additionally, the manufacturer says the country is strategically located to serve growing solar markets in South Asia and beyond. It also offers strong policy incentives for renewable energy and clean-tech investment.

Local media reports suggest that the JV has the ambition to scale up the capacity to GW-level production by 2035.

“With Solar EPC Development Ltd’s local strength and Sonnex’s technology leadership, we are well positioned to deliver high-performance solar solutions and build a robust clean energy supply chain,” stated Sonnex.

Bangladesh has been launching large-scale solar energy tenders of late, including an over 2.6 GW solar tender call issued by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDP) in March 2025. However, local media points to the lack of interest among investors as the interim government cancelled several renewable energy contracts in recent times (see Bangladesh Launches 2.6 GW Solar Capacity Tender).
