Key Takeaways
  • Sunrev Solar of China is investing in vertically integrated solar PV manufacturing in Egypt

  • Construction has begun for Phase I, under which it will establish 2 GW manufacturing capacity for solar cells and modules each

  • Phase II is planned to bring online silicon ingots and wafers, along with more cell and module production capacity

Chinese solar PV manufacturer Sunrev Solar has launched construction of a $200 million vertically integrated solar manufacturing facility in Egypt. The project, planned in 2 phases, will be one of the largest industrial renewable energy investments in the country.

Phase I involves setting up 2 GW production capacity each for solar cells and modules, with a $90 million investment. Phase II will see another $110 million investment to localize key raw materials such as silicon ingots and wafers, while further expanding solar cell and module production capacity.

The entire project will cover an area of 200,000 sq. m. in the Ain Sokhna Industrial Zone, which is part of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE). Sunrev is collaborating with TEDA-Egypt, the industrial developer. Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly was present during the groundbreaking ceremony.

It is expected to create more than 1,800 direct job opportunities across the 2 phases, in addition to thousands of indirect jobs, according to SCZONE.

Located near the strategic location of Sokhna Port, the project is scheduled to begin operations in H1 2026.

Chairman of the SCZONE Waleid Gamal El-Dien said, “SCZONE is proud to host one of the largest industrial investments in the renewable energy components sector. This project represents a significant step forward in localizing advanced industries in Egypt and enhancing industrial integration in clean energy, particularly solar power.”

Thanks to Chinese interest in solar PV manufacturing in the strategic market of Egypt, with its vast deserts and abundant sunshine, along with government support, the country could soon see an entire ecosystem in place. This investment from Sunrev follows similar previous investments announced in the African nation by its compatriots – JA Solar’s 4 GW solar cell and module capacity and Kibing Solar’s $700 million solar glass manufacturing unit (see Chinese Manufacturer To Establish Solar Glass Factory In Egypt).

Singapore’s EliTe Solar previously announced plans for an 8 GW PV manufacturing hub in the country (see EliTe Solar Unveils 8 GW Solar PV Manufacturing Plans For Egypt).

Meanwhile, Sunrev commissioned its 10 GW solar cell production factory back in China this month (see China Solar PV News Snippets).
