EIA expects the US to add 33.3 GW of utility-scale solar in 2025, accounting for over half of the total new power-generating capacity
H1 2025 saw 12 GW of solar and 5.9 GW of storage additions, led by the state of Texas
Battery storage capacity will reach 18.3 GW by year-end, registering a record-breaking deployment pace
Wind will likely add 7.8 GW and natural gas 4.7 GW, while 7.8 GW of coal and gas capacity retires by December 2025
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects the US to bring online 33.3 GW of new utility-scale solar PV capacity in 2025, including 21.3 GW in the 2nd half. This would make solar account for more than half of the 64 GW that it says developers plan to bring online as new electric generating capacity in the country.
Till June 2025, the US’ utility-scale solar segment installed 12 GW capacity with another 5.9 GW in battery storage additions, as per the agency’s latest survey of electric generating capacity changes.
By the end of this year, battery storage deployments will total 18.3 GW.
If all of 64 GW planned power generating capacity comes online by the end of this year, EIA says it will be a record, beating the previous high of 58 GW installed in 2022, of which 57 GW came from natural gas. This year, the additions will be led by solar PV.
“If planned capacity additions for solar photovoltaic and battery storage capacities are realized, both technologies will add more capacity than in any previous year,” according to EIA.
Texas saw the largest solar additions during H1 with 3.2 GW or about 27% capacity, and is set to add another 9.7 GW during H2 this year.
After solar, battery storage accounted for the 2nd largest share of capacity additions between January and June 2025 at 26% or 5.9 GW, about half of which was in Arizona or California, adds EIA. Developers in Texas are expecting to bring 7 GW online in 2025, with a major chunk during 2nd half of the year.
For wind energy, EIA projects 7.8 GW of capacity additions this year, followed by 4.7 GW of natural gas. This year, the US is set to decommission 6.2 GW of coal and 1.6 GW of natural gas capacity.
TaiyangNews will explore the US solar market in view of the regulatory shifts at the upcoming RE+ 2025 event in Las Vegas, US. It is co-organizing the 2025 Solar Made in USA summit in collaboration with RE+ and EUPD Research. To be held on September 8, 2025, it will feature leading names from the world of solar to discuss the future of US solar and storage manufacturing and future strategies for the players in light of the regulatory hurdles created by the OBBBA.
