- Province Energy has raised HyEnergy’s renewable energy capacity to 12 GW
- It will include 6.8 GW onshore wind and 5.2 GW solar PV capacity in Carnarvon
- EPA has opened a 7-day solicitation period to assess the project’s EIA process
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in Western Australia has solicited opinions on Province Energy Ltd’s HyEnergy Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Project whose renewable energy capacity is now proposed as 12 GW.
Originally proposed to have 1 GW capacity, Province raised the project’s renewable energy capacity to 8 GW and brought Total Eren on board (see Total Eren Joins 8 GW Green Hydrogen Project In Australia).
According to the EPA call, the company proposes to install 6.8 GW of onshore wind turbines on up to 945 hectares of land. For 5.2 GW solar arrays, it intends to use up to 10,000 hectares of land. Green hydrogen and ammonia produced are planned to be exported to the green energy market, according to the EPA.
Proposal also includes establishing a multiuser port facility with a material offloading facility and export terminal, along with a battery energy storage and a hydrogen and ammonia production facility.
Province plans to build this infrastructure across 3 locations within the Shire of Carnarvon in the Gascoyne region.
Calling it the initial stage of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process, the EPA said comments are sought on whether or not the EPA should assess a proposal and, if so, what level of assessment is considered appropriate.
The public comment period is open for a 7-day period, from January 15, 2024 to January 21, 2024. Details are available on EPA’s website.
Province aims to become a significant producer and exporter of 100% renewable green hydrogen/ammonia producer and exporter from Western Australia through the HyEnergy project. It has selected the Carnarvon region due to its ‘world class’ solar and wind resources.
In November 2023, the Western Australian government provided additional licenses to the company to support studies on land and water. Province says it has already completed a bathymetry survey over the proposed area.
