Key Takeaways
  • CNTE introduced its STAR-X series 20-ft- container-based integrated BESS for C&I and utility applications

  • This system is equipped with 530 Ah LFP battery cells with a life of more than 10,000 cycles

  • According to the company, it features an integrated grid-forming PCS

CATL-backed energy storage system (ESS) provider, Contemporary Nebula Technology Energy (CNTE) showcased its latest STAR-X series 20-ft container-based battery energy storage system (BESS) at Intersolar Europe 2026. This AC-coupled BESS features flexible backup duration while maintaining performance and safety functions.

The BESS combines battery storage and a liquid-cooled power conversion system (PCS) within a 6,058 × 2,438 × 2,896 mm (W × L × H) container. The system is equipped with multiple battery packs, each consisting of 530 Ah lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells. It can charge or discharge up to 5.6 MWh of energy at 2.8 MW of full-load power and 0.5C rate at 690 V (AC) for up to 2 hours or until the battery cut-off voltage is reached. Its PCS can also be configured for a longer duration of 4 hours at a reduced 1.4 MW backup power and 0.25C rate to charge or discharge the same capacity. According to the company, the cells have a life of more than 10,000 cycles with up to 70% end-of-life (EoL) state of health (SOH) retention. The system uses a circulating liquid-cooled battery thermal regulation mechanism to ensure cell-to-cell temperature variance within an acceptable limit.

This product is delivered to a customer site with a prefabricated, pre-wired system with internal DC cabling, and is pre-commissioned at the factory level, simplifying the installation & commissioning (I&C) process while ensuring safety. The company notes that the BESS weighs less than 45 tons, which meets international transportation and shipping requirements.

Fire safety features include functions across the cell-to-pack and container level. It also automatically monitors the system’s insulation resistance (IR) value 24/7, ensuring safety against earth leakage faults.

These 2- or 4-hour backup systems support multiple grid-interactive dispatchable clean energy management services, including renewable energy integration, peak shaving, frequency response, and grid-forming support. Its PCS has grid-forming capabilities.
