Ola Electric Targets Utility-Scale Storage Market 

Indian electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Ola Electric has entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with renewable energy company Axis Energy Ventures to explore the deployment of up to 20 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) by 2032. This is the first large-scale partnership for Ola Electric’s upcoming energy storage platform for commercial, industrial, and utility-scale applications, Ola Mahashakti. Ola Electric says that Ola Mahashakti will roll out BESS for utility-scale storage designed and manufactured in India, and is due to be launched on August 15, 2026. It has already entered the residential battery market with Ola Shakti. Axis Energy has a pipeline of around 3.5 GW storage-backed renewable energy projects, and has secured grid approvals for over 3.75 GW of projects in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. It will use the Ola partnership to incorporate batteries into its projects. Axis is also developing 5 GW renewable energy capacity in Odisha (see India Solar PV News Snippets). 

Base Power Raises $1B to Scale Home Battery Network 

Base Power of the US has raised $1 billion in Series D funding at a $13 billion post-money valuation. The company, founded in 2023, has raised more than $2.5 billion to date. The latest round is led by Ribbit, Addition, Valor Equity Partners, and JPMorganChase’s Strategic Investment Group, with participation from Altimeter, D1 Capital Partners, Sands Capital, Coatue, Layer Global, and Energy Impact Partners. It has also received reinvestment from the company’s major existing investors, including Thrive Capital, a16z, Lightspeed, Trust Ventures, and CapitalG, among others. 

Base has also launched Base Core, a home battery now being produced at its factory in Austin, Texas. It said that Base Core is available in 39.2 kWh and 78.4 kWh configurations and is designed and built in the US. The company says the battery can be installed in under an hour and is designed to provide extended backup power while also supporting the grid. Led by CEO and Co-Founder Zach Dell, Base plans to use the funding to expand Base Core deployments across the US and increase hiring. 

Revera Begins Work on Windyhill Battery Project 

Carlyle-backed Revera Energy has started construction of the 200 MW/400 MWh Windyhill BESS project in Bearsden, Scotland. The project is the first of three battery projects in Revera’s Scottish portfolio to enter construction, shared the company. Windyhill is part of a planned nearly 1 GW/2 GWh portfolio with the Hunterston (400 MW/800 MWh) and Kincardine (400 MW/800 MWh) BESS projects, representing more than £500 million in investment. GE Vernova is the technology partner for the project, while Mitie and OCU are supporting project delivery. Danske Commodities will provide route-to-market services once the battery is operational. The project is expected to begin commercial operations in Q1 2028. Revera said this portfolio will support Scotland’s transition to a more flexible, renewables-driven grid.

Germany’s ‘First’ Subsidy-Free Solar-Storage Hybrid PPA 

German renewable energy developer MaxSolar GmbH and DB Energie have signed a 10-year hybrid power purchase agreement (PPA) for the Friedrichshof solar-plus-storage project in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. The project combines a 37 MW ground-mounted solar plant with a 15 MW/30 MWh co-located BESS and is described as Germany’s ‘first’ subsidy-free project to jointly market solar generation and battery storage under a hybrid PPA. The facility is scheduled for commissioning in summer 2027; the solar plant is expected to generate around 36,680 MWh annually. Under the agreement, MaxSolar will supply the electricity and certificates of origin to DB Energie through a pay-as-nominated delivery model. MaxSolar said that the agreement is intended to demonstrate how combining solar generation with storage can provide greater flexibility and support the market integration of renewable energy without subsidies. DB Energie, a subsidiary of the German railway group Deutsche Bahn, will use the contracted renewable electricity as part of its railway power portfolio. 

Revolve Expands Ontario Storage Portfolio With 24.3 MWh 

US-based Revolve Renewable Power has agreed to acquire 100% of Trillium Storage Limited Partnership and Trillium Storage GP Inc. This brings to its kitty six operating behind-the-meter (BTM) battery energy storage projects at commercial and industrial (C&I) sites across Ontario, Canada. The portfolio has a combined capacity of 14.2 MW/24.3 MWh. Revolve expects this to add contracted, recurring revenue to its operating portfolio. The CAD 7.63 million acquisition will be funded through an $11 million bridge credit facility from Whitfield Power Solutions. Following the acquisition, Stem is expected to continue operating all six BESS projects under the existing services agreement. Revolve expects the portfolio to generate annual revenue of CAD 2.12 million to CAD 2.97 million, based on its current projections.

Intellect Plans 2 MW/8 MWh Grid Battery in Kumamoto 

Japan’s Intellect has started development of a grid-scale battery storage project in Kumamoto City, Japan. The project with a rated output of about 2 MW and storage capacity of 8 MWh will be developed on land owned by the BLD Group, whose businesses include wedding facilities through BLD WEDDINGS and renewable-energy generation through BLD Power Stations. 

Intellect says the battery is expected to begin operations in June 2027. It will handle project development, EPC, and O&M, while NAXT will provide asset management and an aggregator will manage market operations and power balancing. The project will support electricity supply-demand balancing and grid stability.
