Trina Storage showcased its Elementa Hybrid Genset at Data Center World Power 2026
It energizes a new AIDC by forming a microgrid and avoids a sluggish utility grid connection
The company also provides simulation and data validation platforms to assess operational reliability before site deployment
It is slated to be commercially launched at RE+ 2026
The energy storage arm of Trinasolar, Trina Storage, previewed its upcoming Elementa Hybrid Genset at Data Center World Power 2026. According to the company, the product is designed to help North American AI data center developers get power faster and maintain a reliable electricity supply.
The hybrid genset pairs a gas-based customized firm power plant with the company’s Elementa series containerized battery energy storage systems (BESS) (see Trina Storage’s 6.25 MWh BESS For The US). In the absence of a reliable utility grid connection, this platform can form a microgrid by leveraging the BESS's grid-forming technology, helping synchronize with the gas-based plant and energize the data center. The company says this saves long lead times associated with utility grid connections. For context, hyperscalers or developers face lengthy lead times in parts of the US, such as Virginia's 5 to 7 years. The company noted that this faster charge-up also helps developers align with 2027 NTP (Notice to Proceed) and 2029 (COD) commercial operation date windows.
On the operations side, the gas-fired power plant serves as a continuous, dispatchable power source for the data center. The BESS intermittently jumps into action by fast charging or discharging during fluctuating AI training or inference loads, helping absorb instantaneous power transients and suppress voltage sags without oscillation or hunting. In addition to this 'load-transient sensing technology', it can provide emergency backup during power plant disturbances, protecting GPU clusters from task interruptions. The company calls it 'Gas + BESS Transition Technology'.
In a weak-grid interconnection scenario with frequent outages and poor power quality, the BESS performs black-start operations at the plant level for a rapid transition to islanded mode. Trina Storage states that this 'self-healing' against volatile grid conditions ensures continuous compute availability.
The company offers a System-Level HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) Simulation and an Empirical Validation Platform to assess and validate the platform's operational reliability under complex scenarios before site-level deployment.
Trina expects to launch this hybrid platform commercially at RE+2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The launch will feature complete engineering documentation, final commercial configurations, and technical whitepapers.
