Key Takeaways
  • Italy-based COMAL offers the SunHunter horizontal single-axis tracker

  • The tracker accommodates up to 84 modules and offers a standard tracking range of ±55°

  • It is available in 1P, 2P, and 2P-2L configurations

Italy-based COMAL presented its horizontal single-axis tracker, SunHunter, at Intersolar Europe 2026. Available in 1P and 2P configurations, each tracker row can accommodate up to 84 modules depending on the project layout.

SunHunter offers a standard tracking range of ±55°, which can be extended to ±60°. It supports north-south terrain slopes of up to 9%. The tracker also uses self-aligning bearings that can adjust by up to 9° to accommodate misalignment between structural components, helping the tracker rotate smoothly. The bearings do not require lubrication or routine maintenance and, according to COMAL, are designed for more than 28 years of operation.

The tracker is driven by a DC slew drive with a nominal torque of 5,500 Nm. A controller powered by a 30 W solar panel and a 24 V, 6 Ah battery enables it to operate independently of the PV plant’s main power supply.

SunHunter uses an astronomical algorithm to calculate the sun’s position and incorporates backtracking to reduce shading between rows. The angle of each tracker can be controlled independently, including during backtracking, to account for variations across the site. According to COMAL, the system offers a tracking accuracy of 0.2° and is compatible with bifacial modules.

Each tracker controller communicates with a central unit through a ZigBee-based wireless mesh network. The system also incorporates an inclinometer for functional checks and a web interface for monitoring the trackers and sending operating commands.
