Key Takeaways
  • TNO, Perovion, and Toyo Seikan have agreed on a roadmap to advance flexible perovskite solar cells toward industrial production

  • They plan to explore roll-to-roll manufacturing and advanced encapsulation materials

  • The team says their collaboration will tackle key challenges towards wider commercialization of this technology

Dutch research organization TNO, its spin-off Perovion Technologies, and Japan’s Toyo Seikan Group Holdings have come together to advance flexible perovskite solar cell technology toward commercialization.

Under the partnership, Perovion will work to commercialize flexible perovskite solar cells developed at TNO using its roll-to-roll manufacturing process.

TNO launched Perovion in March 2026 with the aim of building a roll-to-roll factory for perovskite solar films in the Netherlands, with construction scheduled to begin in 2030 (see TNO Spin-Off Perovion Technologies To Industrialize Perovskite Solar Films).

Toyo Seikan will support the project with its expertise in advanced materials, manufacturing, and module integration, developed under the MiraNeo brand. It includes advanced encapsulation materials. TNO will continue to support research, technology development, and scale-up.

Hailed as one of the most promising next-generation solar technologies, perovskite solar cells can be thin, flexible, and lightweight, making them a possible choice for applications that cannot support conventional glass-based silicon panels. Potential applications include lightweight roofs, façades, vehicles, and historic buildings.

However, commercial development of perovskite solar cells has been limited by performance and durability in real-life conditions.

With this partnership, the trio plans to develop materials, manufacturing processes, and module technologies suitable for mass production.

“By connecting Perovion’s technology with Toyo Seikan’s expertise and market knowledge, we are bringing flexible perovskite solar technology closer to large-scale deployment and the international market,” said Tjark-Tjin-A-Tsoi, TNO's CEO.

In a recently signed Statement of Intent, the trio agreed on a joint roadmap covering technology development, materials, manufacturing processes, and module technologies.

TaiyangNews will delve into next-generation PV and space solar technologies on Day 3 of the flagship High-Efficiency Solar Technologies Conference in November 2026. The three days are November 11, 20, and 25. Registration for this online conference is free and can be done here.
