Bangladesh has launched an international EPC tender for a 220 MW AC solar PV project in Sonagazi, Feni district
The project will be jointly financed by the Islamic Development Bank and state-owned EGCB
Bidders must meet financial and technical experience requirements before the September 15 submission deadline
The Electricity Generation Bangladesh PLC (EGCB) has invited bids for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for a 220 MW AC solar PV power plant in Sonagazi, Feni district.
It has issued the tender under a one-stage international competitive bidding process without prequalification.
Officially titled the Sonagazi 220 MW Solar Power Plant Construction Project (Sonagazi 220 MW Solar Power and Livelihoods Improvement Project), it is being financed through a combination of forward leases, loans, and grants.
The EGCB will jointly finance the project along with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). The bank had previously issued a general procurement notice in December 2025, under which Bangladesh sought $143.28 million equivalent from IsDB to cover the cost of the Sonagazi project.
The contract covers the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the solar PV plant.
According to the tender documents, the construction period is set at 18 months. Eligible bidders must demonstrate experience in the power sector over the past five years. They are also required to have completed either one similar contract worth at least $70 million or two similar contracts valued at a minimum of $50 million each during the last 10 years.
The procurement will follow IsDB's guidelines for international competitive bidding. Electronic bidding will not be accepted, and bids will be opened publicly on the same day in the presence of bidders' representatives.
EGCB launched the call on July 29, 2026, with bids due by September 20, 2026.
Bangladesh is encouraging private sector engagement in the country’s solar sector as its rapidly declining oil reserves threaten to cover only short-term domestic demand. The country remains dependent on imported natural gas and oil. Nevertheless, political uncertainty has emerged as a critical constraint on large-scale solar development, even as the country targets 10 GW of solar capacity by 2030 (see Bangladesh’s Solar PV Capacity Falls Short In Shielding the Economy From Global Energy Crisis).
By the end of 2025, Bangladesh’s total installed solar PV capacity had reached 1,146 MW, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
