Key Takeaways
  • NHPC has invited bids for a 1.2 GW solar PV tender with 600 MW/2,400 MWh of ESS

  • An additional 1.2 GW of solar capacity, along with ESS, is available under a greenshoe option

  • NHPC will enter 25-year contracts with the winners and sell power to other buyers

India’s state-owned hydropower utility NHPC Limited has launched a competitive solicitation process for 1.2 GW solar power capacity, along with a 600 MW/2,400 MWh energy storage system (ESS). It also offers an additional capacity of up to 1.2 GW with ESS under a greenshoe option.

According to the terms of the tender, every 1 MW of contracted solar capacity must be accompanied by at least 0.5 MW/2 MWh of ESS capacity. Minimum project size is set at 50 MW, along with 25 MW/100 MWh of ESS.

Without the greenshoe option, the cumulative capacity offered should not exceed 600 MW with a minimum of 300 MW/1,200 MWh ESS.

With the greenshoe option, the maximum limit offered to a winning bidder is 1.2 GW of solar with 600 MW/2,400 MWh ESS capacity.

For projects in the Northeastern states and states under Special Category, the minimum contracted solar PV capacity by a bidder is 30 MW with a 15 MW/60 MWh ESS component.

The request for selection (RFS) call is open to solar power generators, willing to establish this grid-connected capacity anywhere in India. Land will be identified and arranged by the winners.

NHPC will procure the solar power produced by the winning projects to be sold to the state utilities, discoms and/or other beneficiaries. Power purchase contracts will be signed with a 25-year duration.

The agency launched the tender on March 26, 2025. It will admit bids till April 24, 2025.

In December 2024, NHPC launched a 1.2 GW wind-solar hybrid tender with an additional 1.2 GW under a greenshoe option. Before that, it sought bidders for 2.4 GW solar and ESS with a greenshoe option in September 2024 (see NHPC Invites Bidders For 2.4 GW Wind-Solar Hybrid Projects).
