Amazon Contracts 670,000 MWh Annually From 50 MW Amazon Wind Farm In Scotland & Two Solar Projects In US To Power Amazon Webs Services Data Centers

In yet another clean energy procurement announcement from the global e-commerce giant, Amazon has signed power purchase agreements (PPA) for three new solar power plants in the US and Spain with 329 MW combined capacity. Power generated from these facilities will be used for its European fulfillment network and Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers.
Amazon identifies these projects as the company’s first large-scale project in Spain with 149 MW capacity in the southeast of Seville. Two new solar power plants with 100 MW capacity will come up in Lee County, Illinois and 80 MW in Northern Virginia. Together the two US projects will generate close to 400,000 MWh of renewable energy annually.
The Lee County project is the company’s first large-scale renewable energy solar project in Illinois and its ninth in Virginia. Amazon contracted solar power from its eighth renewable energy project in Virginia in October 2019 with 215 MW capacity some of which will be located in North Carolina (see Amazon Signs Up For 265 MW RE In Scotland & US).
Amazon hasn’t identified the individual projects in both Spain and the US. Facebook too signed a corporate solar PPA for 61.6 MW capacity out of 80 MW Altavista Solar Project in Campbell County, Virginia in November 2019 to power its Virginia operations (see More Solar Power For Facebook In Virginia).
With these deals, Amazon says it now has launched over 70 renewable energy projects, comprising 21 utility scale wind/solar farms and over 50 solar rooftops, that will provide more than 1.9 GW capacity and are projected to deliver over 5.3 million MWh of power annually.
Amazon’s Director of Sustainability Kara Hurst said these deals bring Amazon closer to its goal of going net zero carbon by 2040 as it aims to become a 80% renewable energy run business by 2024 and 100% by 2030.
