Trinasolar unveils i-TOPCon Ultra

Vertically integrated solar manufacturer Trinasolar has launched its latest-generation n-type TOPCon cell technology, named i-TOPCon Ultra. The technology incorporates features such as full passivating contact, optical parasitic absorption suppression, and ultra-fine grid lines, achieving a laboratory cell efficiency of up to 26.58%. The company states that these i-TOPCon Ultra cells enhance the performance of its Vertex N-type modules. For instance, its 2,382 x 1,134 mm medium-format module achieves a module efficiency of 24.8%, with a maximum power output of 670 W.

Earlier this month, Trinasolar announced that its high-efficiency n-type bifacial i-TOPCon cells developed in-house achieved a record-breaking efficiency of 26.58%, as certified by Germany’s ISFH (see Trinasolar Achieves 26.58% ‘Record’ N-Type TOPCon Solar Cell Efficiency). This achievement makes it the first company to surpass 26.5% efficiency for TOPCon cells.

JinkoSolar retains Forbes China Globalization ranking

Leading vertically integrated solar module manufacturer JinkoSolar has been named to the 2024 Forbes China Top 30 Globalization Flagship Brands list for a consecutive second time. This award recognizes exceptional enterprises leading China's globalization efforts. Jinko was named under the flagship brands category, which includes publicly listed companies with market capitalizations exceeding RMB 10 billion. JinkoSolar Vice President Dany Qian highlighted the company’s collaboration with PIF and other investors to establish a factory in Saudi Arabia as a significant milestone. This shift reflects JinkoSolar's transition from regional production to a globalized footprint, evolving from sole proprietorship to joint ventures, and expanding from exporting products to exporting technologies, expertise, and systems.

Recently, JinkoSolar announced that 53% of its total electricity consumption now comes from green energy (see China Solar PV News Snippets).

AIKO plans 20 GW BC module shipments by 2025

In its latest investor relations update, solar module manufacturer AIKO has disclosed that it targets over 20 GW of back contact (BC) module shipments in 2025. The company’s current BC production capacity includes 10 GW in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, with an additional 15 GW ramping up in Yiwu City, Zhejiang Province. Its facility in Jinan City of Shandong Province is under construction, and AIKO envisions a long-term BC capacity exceeding 100 GW. Regarding cost reduction, AIKO emphasized advancements like half-cell technology, side passivation, and full-screen techniques to boost module power, alongside water and electricity-saving measures, equipment upgrades, and capacity optimization to lower non-silicon costs, enabling BC modules to match TOPCon in non-silicon cost.

For future solar cell technologies, AIKO stated that BC cells offer the highest open-circuit voltage and current among crystalline silicon cells, maximizing tandem cell efficiency without bottlenecks. The company said that it conservatively estimates ABC cell efficiency could surpass 28% within 3-5 years.

Recently, TaiyangNews spoke to Aiko Energy’s Christian Peter at the bifiPV Workshop in Zhuhai on Why Bifaciality Matters For Back Contact Technology.

Betterial develops thermoplastic film for perovskite modules

Solar encapsulation material maker Betterial has introduced a new thermoplastic encapsulation film tailored for perovskite modules at the 20th China SoG Silicon and PV Power Conference (20th CSPV). The company’s innovative solution is designed for stable encapsulation in low-temperature environments. The film features non-polar additive resistance and high adhesion, meeting the requirements of perovskite and perovskite tandem modules. For aesthetic and cost considerations in colored modules, Betterial has also developed new colored films that offer significantly improved light transmission compared to conventional colored glass.

In October, TrendForce named Betterial among the top 7 companies in its global solar PV encapsulation film shipment rankings for the first half of 2024 (see China Solar PV News Snippets).

Sunwell's HJT equipment recognized as breakthrough by NEA

Sunwell’s heterojunction (HJT) manufacturing equipment has been included in the National Energy Administration's (NEA) list of first-of-its-kind major technical equipment in the energy sector. This list highlights domestic innovations that have achieved significant technological breakthroughs, hold independent intellectual property rights, and have yet to achieve widespread market adoption. NEA selected Sunwell’s high-efficiency, cost-reducing copper grid HJT solar cell production line, with a mass production capacity of 14,400 wafers per hour and a low breakage rate of just 0.15%. According to the company, this equipment employs cutting-edge edge protection and flexible electroplating technologies, making it the industry’s first low-cost copper grid solar cell production system.

Earlier this month, Sunwell announced that the first batch of its GW-level THL equipment passed Tongwei’s acceptance (see China Solar PV News Snippets).
