The Atum Solar Complex will include 2 GW of solar cell capacity, 2 GW of solar module capacity, and 1 GWh of ESS in Egypt
All solar cells produced will be exported, while modules and storage systems will serve local and regional markets
It is expected to create about 850 direct jobs and support Egypt’s push to localize green energy manufacturing and boost exports
An international consortium that includes China’s JA Solar has broken ground on a multi-GW solar energy manufacturing complex in Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). The $210 million Atum Solar Complex will host 3 facilities with annual capacities of 2 GW of solar cells, 2 GW for solar panels, and 1 GWh for energy storage systems (ESS).
While solar panels and ESS will cater to both the domestic and regional markets, the entire solar cell output will be exported as Egypt makes use of its strategic location and free trade agreements (FTA) to access global markets. The complex is expected to create 850 direct jobs.
Located in the Sokhna region, the solar complex is a collaboration between JA Solar, Egypt’s AH Industrial Management, the UAE’s Global South Utilities (GSU), and Bahrain’s Infinity Capital. It will come up on 200,000 sq. mt. space within the Sokhna Industrial Zone. A land usufruct contract for the complex was signed in August 2025 as the consortium agreed to source Egyptian aluminum and glass (see Egypt Seals Deal For 2 GW Solar Manufacturing Hub).
Attending the ground-breaking ceremony, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, emphasized Egypt’s commitment to localizing green energy industries under its vision to replace imports with high-quality local products and open new export markets.
JA Solar had unveiled its 2 GW solar cell and 2 GW module production plans in Egypt with Global South Utilities in November 2024 (see JA Solar Headed To Egypt For 4 GW Solar Cell & Module Production).
Since then, several solar PV manufacturing announcements have been made for the Egyptian market, including solar glass factories to be established by Kibing Solar and CSH Holding (see China’s CSG Holding Announces Egyptian Solar Glass Factory).
