Amazon has signed its first standalone battery storage tolling agreement in Australia
The deal covers Anza Power’s 50 MW/200 MWh Bairnsdale battery in Victoria
The battery will connect directly to Australia’s National Electricity Market
Amazon has signed a tolling agreement with Anza Power for a 50 MW/200 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Victoria. This marks the company’s first standalone battery storage tolling agreement in Australia, as well as across Asia Pacific.
The agreement covers the Bairnsdale BESS in East Gippsland. According to Anza, this is the first such arrangement in Australia involving a non-energy business.
Under the agreement, the Bairnsdale battery will connect directly to the electricity grid rather than being paired with a solar or wind farm. The system will provide 50 MW of AC capacity and 200 MWh of storage to the National Electricity Market (NEM). The battery will be used to store electricity to be dispatched during periods of high demand.
With this agreement, Amazon is essentially reserving the right to use a large standalone battery, securing access to electricity storage and flexibility without owning the asset.
Anza said this will help improve regional grid reliability and flexibility while supporting greater integration of renewable energy into the grid.
Carlo Frigerio, CEO of Anza Power, said the agreement reflects rising demand from major energy buyers for dedicated storage capacity. The deal builds on the companies’ existing relationship. In April 2026, Amazon announced nine renewable energy deals across New South Wales and Victoria, including five solar-plus-battery storage PPAs with Anza (see Amazon Enters 9 Renewable Energy Contracts In Australia).
