  • ACME Group has signed a land agreement to set up a green hydrogen and green ammonia plant in Oman
  • It will be powered by 3 GW of solar and 500 MW of wind energy to produce 2,400 TPD of green ammonia
  • ACME plans to commission phase I by the end of 2022; it has hired Black & Veatch as the owner’s engineer
  • Construction on Oman facility will start soon after ACME said it would commission a similar project in Bikaner as the world’s ‘1st’ integrated green hydrogen and green ammonia plant

Indian solar power company ACME Group says it will set up one of the world’s largest green ammonia projects in Oman, to be powered by 3 GW solar and 500 MW of wind energy. The facility will be equipped to produce 2,400 tons per day (TPD) of green ammonia. Annual production capacity of green ammonia here will be close to 0.9 million tons.

ACME has signed a land reservation agreement with a Oman government entity, the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) to establish the facility at Special Economic Zone at port of Duqm. Green ammonia produced at the $3.5 billion facility will be exported to demand centers in Europe and Asia.

Company’s Founder and Chairman Manoj K. Upadhyay shared that his company has hired Black & Veatch as the owner’s engineer for this facility, and aims to have phase I of the project operational by the end of 2022. It is a result of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between. The group and The Oman Company for the Development of the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) back in March 2021.

Construction for phase I is scheduled to begin soon after ACME Group said it would commission the world’s ‘1st’ integrated green hydrogen and green ammonia plant in India’s Bikaner city in Rajasthan. Here, green hydrogen will be produced using 5 MW, solar plant—expandable to 10 MW.

The group touts a portfolio of 5.25 GW, comprising 2.2 GW operational capacity, and another 3.05 GW under construction across 12 Indian states. Its announcement comes soon after it raised $334 million through offshore green bonds in July 2021 (see India PV News Snippets: REC, RUMSL, Tata, ACME Solar).

OPAZ said the agreement will allow ACME to conduct field studies for phase I, including installing anemometers to measure wind speed. It added that the organization is currently negotiating with several international companies to establish green hydrogen and green ammonia projects in Duqm, Salalah and Sohar. In November 2020, OPAZ designated 100 km² area enough to generate 10 GW of electricity at SEZAD. It is also working to allocate specific area within Sohar Free Zone to produce solar energy.

Port of Duqm in Oman is where DEME Concessions and OQ Alternative Energy are building a green hydrogen project called Hyport Duqm, to be built by Germany’s Uniper that will also turn offtaker for green ammonia to be produced by the facility (see Germany’s Uniper Joins Oman Green Hydrogen Project).

The Kingdom of Oman is also set to become home to another massive green hydrogen project being planned by OQ, EnerTech and InterContinental Energy using 25 GW solar and wind power (see 25 GW Solar & Wind For Oman’s Green Hydrogen Project).
