Bulgaria Opens New Solar Subsidy Round

  • Bulgarian Energy Ministry has opened a state funding round for residential solar segment
  • BGN 240 million is available under the round for solar PV systems of up to 10 kW, with or without storage
  • Such systems will be eligible to receive up to 70% of total investment, not exceeding BGN 15,000

The Ministry of Energy in Bulgaria is offering BGN 240 million ($135 million) budget to support residential solar installations of up to 10 kW capacity which may also include storage system, and solar water heating systems to increase the use of renewable energy in the final electricity consumption of households.

Solar PV systems with or without energy storage will be eligible to receive up to 70% of total costs incurred, with amount not exceeding BGN 15,000 ($8,425). Investment on solar water heaters will be covered 100% with costs of up to BGN 1,960.83 ($1,101.4). All eligible systems need to be installed at the permanent address of the applicants.

Out of BGN 240 million, the ministry says BGN 140 million ($78.6 million) comes from the Recovery and Sustainability Mechanism and BGN 100 million ($56 million) from state and private financing.

The application round opened on May 9, 2023, and last date to submit applications is November 10, 2023, as per the call.  

In February 2023, the Ministry of Innovation and Growth opened a BGN 200 million funding round to support up to 1 MW solar and storage facilities for micro-, small- and medium-sized companies (see Bulgaria Opens Funding Round For Solar & Storage Projects).
