Portugal’s Cumulative Solar Capacity Exceeds 2.22 GW

DGEG Says Portugal Installed 546 MW New Solar Capacity Within H1/2022

Portugal’s Cumulative Solar Capacity Exceeds 2.22 GW

Solar PV capacity installations in Portugal have been growing steadily since 2013 and have now grown to 2.224 GW at the end of July 2022.

  • Portugal’s aggregate solar power capacity at the end of June 2022 grew to 2.224 GW
  • In H1/2022, new PV additions grew by 546 MW and another 32 MW came online in July 2022
  • Among all other renewable energy technologies, solar PV has grown the highest between 2013 and H1/2022 in the country

The cumulative installed solar PV capacity of Portugal at the end of July 2022 reached 2.224 GW, with the addition of 546 MW in H1/2022, according to latest installation numbers released by the country’s Direcao Geral de Energia e Geologia or Directorate General of Energy and Geology (DGEG).

While at the end of H1/2022, the cumulative additions were counted at 2.192 GW, with the installation of 32 MW in July, the aggregate increased to 2.224 GW.

Out of 546 MW installed between January 2022 and June 2022, 321 MW came from solar systems for self-consumption. DGEG says in July 2022, the Alentejo region was responsible for 51% of the national PV production.

The installed renewable energy capacity of Portugal at the end of July 2022 was 16.179 GW, but it is heavily dependent on hydropower that makes up 7.41 GW of the total. Wind energy follows next with 5.64 GW.

Yet, solar PV was the fastest growing technology having increased from 299 MW in 2013 to 2.192 GW at the end of H1/2022.

According to the EU Solar Market Outlook 2021-2025 of SolarPower Europe (SPE), Portugal is expected to grow its cumulative installed capacity of 6.6 GW under medium scenario by 2025, with the addition of 5.0 GW in 2022-2025.
