  • ACME Group enters initial agreement with Tamil Nadu government to produce 1.1 million tons of green ammonia
  • It will be generated through green hydrogen from a 1.5 GW electrolyzer powered by a 5 GW solar project
  • Green hydrogen and ammonia produced will be used to decarbonize sectors as fertilizers, power, refining and steel and the like

India’s ACME Group has announced plans to develop 1.5 GW electrolyzer capacity, powered by a 5 GW solar PV plant, to produce green hydrogen and 1.1 million tons of ammonia synthesis loop in the state of Tamil Nadu.

To be built for an investment of INR 524.74 billion ($6.6 billion), the project will be one of the largest in India and ‘perhaps the largest in the world’, according to ACME Founder and Chairman Manoj K Upadhyaya.

“This plant will produce green hydrogen and ammonia, which will help to de-carbonize sectors such as fertilizers, power, refining and steel, among others. The project requires 4 ingredients – solar radiation, access to port, availability of land and skilled resources. Tamil Nadu offers all of these,” added Upadhyaya.

The company said it can work with the state government to create an ecosystem of smaller units to realize a project of this scale.

Earlier in June 2022, ACME has entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the State Government of Karnataka to set up a 1.2 metric ton per day (Mtpa) green hydrogen and green ammonia plant with captive solar power unit whose capacity it did not specify. The project is planned between 2022 and 2027.

Primarily a solar power company, ACME has been exploring green hydrogen space for some time now. It is operating what it terms the world’s 1st integrated semi-commercial scale project for green hydrogen and green ammonia in Rajasthan’s Bikaner. It is also working on a green ammonia project in Oman with Norway’s Scatec (see ACME Group To Set Up Green Hydrogen/Ammonia Project).

ACME signed the initial agreement for the Tamil Nadu project during the latter’s Investment Conclave 2022, where Tata Power also announced a 4 GW solar cell and 4 GW module greenfield project (see Tata Power’s 8 GW Solar Manufacturing Plan).
