Global technology company Apple has expanded its clean energy portfolio, announcing new deals in Europe and Asia with Germany’s ib vogt and Asia’s CleanMax Enviro Energy Solutions, with direct investment.
With ib vogt, Apple has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to offtake clean energy from a 134 MW DC/105 MW AC solar PV plant in Spain. The Spanish project Castaño Solar is located in the Segovia province and is expected to come online by December 2024.
According to ib vogt, this is one of the 3 projects with pay-as-produced fixed-price PPAs that it is currently constructing in the province. The company is the EPC as well as the O&M service provider for the project.
In India, Apple has announced a joint venture (JV) with CleanMax to bolster renewable energy projects across the country. Under this JV, CleanMax says it has completed the construction of 14.4 MW of rooftop solar capacity across 6 industrial sites of Apple.
All of this capacity is now installed on Apple’s 2 retail stores and other operations.
This rooftop PV capacity is expected to mitigate around 207,000 tons of carbon emissions throughout their operational life, underscoring Apple’s commitment to environmental sustainability, said CleanMax.
“The collaboration is grounded in an innovative business model, where the environmental benefits accruing from the financed projects will assist Apple in addressing the emissions associated with its corporate operations in India,” explained the renewable energy company for the commercial and industrial (C&I) segment.
Apple counts 16.5 GW of operational renewable energy capacity in its supply chain globally, generating over 25.5 million MWh of clean energy across the supply chain last year. More than 320 of its suppliers globally, representing 95% of its direct manufacturing spend, have committed to 100% renewable energy for Apple production by 2030.
It shares that the company’s China Clean Energy Fund to connect its Chinese suppliers with renewable energy sources has also exceeded its goal as investments have now poured in for over 1 GW of new wind and solar plants in the Asian nation.
The company targets to achieve decarbonization by 2030 and achieve a carbon neutral supply chain by 2030. It earlier claimed to have been carbon-neutral since 2020 (see Apple Pushes Supply Chain To Decarbonize By 2030).
