  • DaVita has signed a 12-year VPPA in Spain to power its global operations with 100% renewable energy.
  • Acciona Energia will deploy its 2 solar power plants in Jarafuel, Valencia under the PPA
  • Both facilities will generate close to 91,000 MWh annually, equal to the amount of energy used by DaVita’s global operations

Publicly listed American dialysis and kidney care service provider DaVita has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) in Spain that it says will enable the company to achieve 100% renewable energy in its global operations.

Spanish energy group Acciona Energia says its Spanish solar plants will generate approximately 91,000 MWh annually, equal to the amount of electricity currently consumed by DaVita’s international operations to help the latter achieve its target.

Acciona will put in service its 2 solar plants in Jarafuel in Valencia under this VPPA. The Ayora I-II-III photovoltaic complex with a combined 85.74 MW capacity will begin commercial operations in 2025.

The 12-year VPPA, with LevelTen Energy as an advisor, will also facilitate the development of this complex.

DaVita is eyeing a more sustainable energy model and advancing its decarbonization goals with this VPPA. The company with 2,675 outpatient dialysis centers in the US and 367 centers in 11 other nations, aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Back in December 2021, DaVita announced achieving 100% renewable energy for its North American operations. It had signed 2 VPPAs with Longroad Energy for a wind farm and a solar farm in Texas.

The Spanish group said it will continue to look for medium- and long-term PPAs with corporate customers to maintain a balanced portfolio in non-regulated generation assets.

“With long-term PPAs such as this one, we accompany our customers through their decarbonization journey, enhancing sustainability in their operations and helping them reach their renewable energy goals,” said Acciona Energia’s Commercial Director Javier Montes.
