  • SachsenEnergie has announced a 150 MW solar power plant in Germany’s Jacobsthal, its largest to date
  • It has secured the support of steel producer Feralpi Stahl that’s looking for green energy to produce green steel
  • Another energy supplier Stadtwerke Riesa is also part of the collaboration but final details are awaited till local municipal council gives a go-ahead to the project

East Germany’s largest municipal utility SachsenEnergie plans to build a 150 MW solar power plant in the country’s Zeithainer district of Jacobsthal and has roped in steel producer Feralpi Stahl as the latter targets green energy supply to roll out green steel.

This is the utility’s largest solar park that on completion is likely to avoid more than 64,000 tons of carbon emissions annually. SachsenEnergie’s Head of Energy Generation, Dr Rutger Kretschmer said regional generation plants of this size are essential for the industrial location and value creation in the region.

However, the collaboration is still being explored by the partners as SachsenEnergie said the concrete form of the participation of Feralpi Stahl and Stadtwerke Riesa, a local energy supplier, is still open. Things will roll on once the Municipal Council of Zeithainer will give a green signal.

“Feralpi Stahl is now investing over €200 million in various projects, including an emission-free spooler rolling mill. And of course, our energy supply automatically comes into focus – we also want green energy for our green steel. And preferably from the region,” said Feralpi Stahl Director Uwe Reinecke.
