JA Solar To Build 20 GW Capacity In Qidong

Vertically integrated solar production company JA Solar Technology Co., Ltd. plans to invest RMB 10.2 billion ($1.56 billion) in the construction of a production facility with an annual capacity of 20 GW in Qidong city of Jiangsu province, the management announced in a brief statement.

The plan is to develop 20 GW worth of solar PV cells, modules and supporting PV equipment projects in Qidong Economic Development Zone, deploying highly automated, and intelligent production equipment, the management revealed in a stock exchange filing, available in Chinese language.

It is estimated to be constructed in 4 years, to be developed in 3 phases.

During the signing of the strategic investment framework agreement with the People’s Government of Qidong city, JA Solar said this project will further expand the production capacity of its large size and high efficiency cells and modules.

It added that the project will enable it to better adapt to continuous growth of the global PV market and meet wide ranging needs of global customers for high efficiency and high quality PV products. There was no information shared about the annual break up of this 20 GW addition, or its distribution for specific products.

In January 2021, JA Solar said it will invest RMB 10 billion for solar cell and module manufacturing capacity in Yangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone in China, starting with 10 GW cell and 6 GW module capacity under phase I, construction on which is to begin in 2021 (see China PV News Snippets: JinkoSolar, Almaden, JA Solar).

During the 500W+ virtual conference of TaiyangNews, JA Solar’s Tao Wang said his company is looking at reaching 23 GW of total module production capacity by the end of 2021 (see TaiyangNews 500W+Conference: JA Solar).
