- Philippines has selected 3.58 GW new solar and wind energy capacity under GEA-2 round
- It includes 2.068 GW ground mounted, rooftop PV capacity, and a 90 MW floating solar project
- There were no bidders for biomass and waste-to-energy technologies, but onshore wind won 1.512 GW in this round
The Department of Energy (DOE) in the Philippines has selected more than 3.58 GW renewable energy projects under its Green Energy Auction round 2 (GEA-2), with solar PV winning 2.068 GW in the form of ground mounted, rooftop and floating PV capacity.
Specifically, a total of 1.968 GW ground mounted PV and 9.39 MW rooftop PV capacity made the cut in Luzon, Mindanao, Visayas regions. Only 1 floating solar project was selected with 90 MW capacity in Luzon. Winning projects need to come online between 2024 and 2026.
For the onshore wind category, the department selected 1.512 GW, to come online in 2025 and 2026. All winners will sign contracts for 20-year power supply. No offers were submitted for biomass and waste-to-energy technologies in this round.
Auctions conducted under the GEA support the development of green energy in the country to help achieve the national goal of 35% renewable energy capacity in the energy mix by 2030, and 50% by 2040.
According to local media reports, GEA-2 originally offered 11.6 GW capacity, to be installed as 3.6 GW in 2024, 3.6 GW in 2025 and 4.4 GW in 2026. The DOE auctioned only 30% of what it offered. Over 8 GW was unsubscribed.
DOE said the auctions are conducted on annual basis and it will be launching subsequent rounds. Developers that did not win this round can participate in the next rounds.
Solar Philippines was the largest winner in GEA-1 in June 2022 winning 1.38 GW of the 2 GW renewable energy auction (see Philippines Concludes 2 GW RE Auction).
