  • Jolywood will be undertaking a project to expand its annual production capacity of backsheets
  • It will invest RMB 882 million to establish 250 million m2 project in Changshu city of Jiangsu province in China
  • Project is aligned with its strategic development needs and is planned to be realized in 2 phases

Solar cell, module and backsheet manufacturer Jolywood plans to invest RMB 882 million to construct a new backsheet production facility in Jiangsu province with an annual production output of 250 million m2 as it seeks to improve market share in this segment. This would more than double current capacities.

Currently, as per the company website, Jolywood has 200 million m2 annual production capacity of backsheets. In 2020, Jolywood was the world’s second largest supplier of backsheets with shipments of 129 minion m2, missing the top spot only by 3 million m2 (see Top 2 took more than 1/3rd). However, in H1/2021, Jolywood shipped more solar backsheets than anyone else, according to our TaiyangNews Market Survey on Backsheets & Encapsulation Materials 2021.

Jolywood’s wholly-owned subsidiary Jiangsu Jolywood New Material Technology will undertake the project to deliver general purpose backsheets that comprise transparent, white, black, etc, stated the company.

According to the company, this will enable it to expand and improve the backsheet production capacity while improving its market share. The expansion is in line with its overall strategic development requirements.

The plan is to construct the project in 2 phases at Changkun Industrial Park in Changshu city. Under phase I, Jolywood will bring online 100 million m2 before the end of 2023 as construction is expected to run for 12 months. For 150 million m2 under phase II, the construction period is estimated to be 18 months post acquiring land. The company aims to realize 50 million m2 every 6 months.

Of the total estimated investment, RMB 667 million will be invested on construction and remaining RMB 215 million in working capital. Jolywood aims to arrange these funds on its own or through self-raised funds.
