German energy giant RWE has expanded its global solar development pipeline from existing 10 GW with the acquisition of solar power company Alpha Solar in Poland that comes to the fold with its 3 GW AC strong project pipeline. The value of the transaction wasn’t disclosed.
These projects are spread across Poland, a ‘focus market’ for RWE, with a majority of them being utility scale facilities at various stages of development, right from early phase identified opportunities to ready-to-build (RTB) projects.
“This acquisition represents an excellent opportunity for RWE to diversify our global solar footprint, while further enhancing our local capabilities and renewables project pipeline in Poland. The country offers good locations for solar plants,” said RWE Renewables’ Onshore Wind and PV Europe & Australia CEO Katja Wünschel.
Alpha Solar moves to RWE group with its team of around 60 professionals who tout expertise across the entire development process from land acquisition to construction readiness. As part of RWE Renewables, the team will work on delivering the existing pipeline of solar projects and also develop new ones.
The German group said it also plans to build and commission new PV projects in Poland with a combined capacity of around 70 MW AC during 2022 and 2023, in addition to Alpha Solar projects.
Poland is a growing solar market in Europe with an aggregate installed capacity of 10 GW by May 2022. The Institute of Renewable Energy (IEO) sees the country exiting 2022 with 12 GW cumulative installed capacity growing to 28.5 GW by 2030 (see Poland Could Host 28.5 GW Solar By 2030).
