Philippines is exploring adding more renewable energy to its grid. The Department of Energy (DoE) has reportedly given green light for grid impact studies (GIS) to be undertaken for 562 MW of renewable energy capacity.

This capacity includes three wind projects, three solar power projects and a 30 MW battery system. Solar power projects total 162 MW, comprising two projects of 70 MW each in San Manuel (Pangasinan) by Pilipinas Newton Energy and Pilipinas Einstein Energy. Another 22 MW Capas solar power plant to be developed by C-Solar Power in Tarlac.

The 30 MW battery energy storage project is being proposed by Silay Global Energy Solutions in Negros Occidental.

The GIS studies will ascertain if the future plant generation can be absorbed by the country’s power grid, according to information shared by consulting firm Enerdata. The consultancy says so far 22 power projects have been cleared for conducting GIS.

Recently, the DoE shared that project developer Solar Philippines has begun the construction of a 150 MW solar power project in Concepcion, Tarlac. It will be using locally manufactured solar panels for the PV system (see Philippines PV Close To 1 GW).
