A total of 23 new fabs are planned to come up in Saudi Arabia which will boost the country’s domestic solar PV manufacturing capacity, according to the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (Modon).
Referring to a statement released by Modon, the Saudi Press Agency said these fabs will be involved in the manufacturing of solar panels and systems to support renewable energy supply chains in the country.
Specifically, the plan is to produce solar cells, solar panels, thin film solar panels, indoor and outdoor lighting units, data display monitors, inverters, metal tripods to generate solar energy and other relevant products that can support the supply chain.
These fabs are said to cover more than 360,000 sq. mtr. space in 12 industrial cities including Riyadh 2nd Industrial City, Sudair City for Industry and Businesses, Al-Kharj Industrial City, Dammam 2nd and 3rd industrial cities, Jeddah 1st, 2nd and 3rd industrial cities, Al-Madinah Industrial City, Al-Baha Industrial City, and the two incubators in private industrial cities that operate under the supervision of Modon.

Modon added that these measures are part of Modon’s National Industrial Development and Logistics Program (NIDLP) in cooperation with public and private sector partners to transfer and localize knowledge in industrial cities.
Calling renewable energy a strategic sector with added value to the national economy, Modon’s CEO Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Salem said his company seeks to attract relevant industrial investments that contribute to realizing Saudi Vision 2030 targets. This strategic document states the nation’s renewable energy ambition as 60 GW capacity by 2030 with 40 GW to come from solar PV alone (see Saudi Arabia Aims For 40 GW Solar By 2030).
In October 2019, the Saudi Industrial and Development Fund (SIDF) launched a new SAR 105 billion fund to support promising new sectors and local manufacturing for the same, counting renewable energy as one such industry (see Saudi Arabia To Fund RE Projects & Manufacturing).
