  • TPSSL has secured an LOA for 125 MW DC floating solar power plant from NHDC Limited
  • It will be located at the Omkareshwar reservoir in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district
  • The INR 5.96 billion project will supply power to MPPMCL after it is commissioned within 13 months

Indian solar EPC company Tata Power Solar Systems Limited (TPSSL) will build a 125 MW DC floating solar power plant as one of the country’s largest such facilities after receiving a letter of award (LOA) from project owner hydro power utility NHDC Limited.

The floating solar project is to come up at the Omkareshwar reservoir in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district. TPSSL won the project under a competitive auction process held by NHDC earlier this year and expects an investment worth INR 5.96 billion ($75 million) to bring it online.

A subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), TPSSL is tasked with commissioning the project within 13 months from the date of LOA. On coming online, power from the project will be supplied to Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL).

The project is part of a 600 MW floating PV facility planned by Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (RUMSL) at the Kaveri branch of Omkareshwar Dam. In May 2022, Amp Energy, NHDC and SJVN won 300 MW capacity each under phase I auctioned by RUMSL as per Mercom India Research (see India PV News Snippets).

In July 2022, RUMSL launched phase II tender for the same with 300 MW capacity (see Tender For 300 MW Floating Solar In India).

For TPSSL, this win takes its total utility scale solar project portfolio to 9.8 GW. In June 2022, it commissioned 101.6 MW DC floating solar plant in Kerala calling it the country’s largest such project (see 101.6 MW Floating Solar Plant Online In India).
